Meet the team!

Did you know It Gets Better UK is almost all volunteers? Aside from our three-strong part-time staff team, all the power behind our team comes from our volunteers who generously share their time to make the world a better place for LGBTQ+ young people.

These are just a few members of our fantastic UK-wide volunteer team! Click on their photos to find out more about them and their contribution to It Gets Better UK.

Kenny is a key part of our social media team, helping us develop our social media and branding strategies as well as running our social media during big It Gets Better UK events. She's been a big part of our partnerships work to collect stories and positive messages from high profile figures in the LGBTQ+ community across the UK. In summer 2024, she was behind the scenes at almost every Pride stall we ran!

Why do you volunteer with It Gets Better UK?

I am an active user of all social media channels and wanted to find a way to give back to the community I love so much.

What's been your favourite volunteering action with It Gets Better UK?

Volunteering at Prides across the country is my favourite part. Not only do I get to celebrate Pride all year, I get to meet up with other volunteers and friends.

What would you say to your younger self?
Life might seem hard and isolating right now, but one day you will be out and proud and find a community of great friends and family!

Fiona is one of our longest-standing Regional Ambassadors, representing part of our Scottish team! With a strong network in Glasgow's queer community, Fiona can be found spreading the It Gets Better message in youth, literary, and interfaith circles. Fiona was a key part of It Gets Better's presence at Edinburgh Pride in June 2024, alongside the rest of the Scottish team including her now-wife, Katie!

Why do you volunteer with It Gets Better UK?

It’s so important for LGBTQ+ youth to see themselves represented, and the kinds of futures they could have. Spreading messages of hope is what it’s all about.

What's been your favourite volunteering action with It Gets Better UK?

There’s been a lot, but being at Edinburgh Pride this year (our first Pride event in Scotland) was in incredible - we met so many people who wanted to share their stories and experiences, it was an emotional day!

What would you say to your younger self?

There is more ahead of you than you can imagine, and the positives will outweigh the rocky times - but overall you will grow into a person who is finally comfortable with who she is. It’s possible!

Every volunteer has the power to make a real difference.

Daniel is an events extraordinaire, leading our stalls at Prides from Cambridge in 2023 to Bristol Trans Pride in 2024. In 2024, he's led 4 Prides across the UK! Leading the stall involves preparation for the day and supporting volunteers at the stall itself. He also introduced street interviews as a new way to capture stories - you can see these on our social media pages! Beyond Pride, he's also designed branded materials for our stalls, and uses his own social media to spread the It Gets Better message.

Why do you volunteer with It Gets Better UK?

My story is quite a personal one. I lost someone extremely close to me several years ago. Since then, I’ve felt a burning need to help reduce the amount of self-harm and suicide experienced in our community, especially our LGBTQ+ youth. Our positive and uplifting stories are just as important as ever.  Spreading the ‘It Gets Better’ message has become an important part of me.

What's been your favourite volunteering action with It Gets Better UK?

For me, it’s been a combination of all my actions to date.  I honestly feel my personal contribution has made a difference in the community and the growth of the charity. Every volunteer at It Gets Better UK has the power to make a real difference.

An unexpected outcome has been the community and friendship you build with fellow volunteers.  This has been especially rewarding for me.

What would you say to your younger self?

Hold on so tightly to the one you love.
